Sprinkler system at Antioch homeless hotel puts out fire

       Firefighters from the Contra Costa County Fire Department were called to report a fire at the commercial building of the Executive Inn Motel in Antioch at 2:53 p.m. Saturday.
        It is reported that one person was unable to leave the smoky room. Upon arrival, the crew of Engine 81 reported that thick smoke was coming from the room, and Antioch police helped one victim to the parking lot.
        Firefighters said the fire was extinguished with sprinkler equipment and did not spread to other premises. The cause of the fire and the amount of damage are not yet known, as crews remain at the scene.
        Back in August 2022, the Antioch City Council voted 3–2 (with Barbanica and Ogorchuk against) to move forward with bridge housing and surrounding services in hotels for the homeless, including on E 18th Street in Antioch. 32 rooms at the Executive Inn.         The idea of ​​renting out the Executive Inn to a homeless hotel was first floated by then-senators Lamar Thorpe and Joy Motts during a press conference in July 2020. Thorpe said the cost was $1 million at the time.
       The press conference came just weeks after Gov. Gavin Newsom and Contra Costa County Superintendent John Joya announced the launch of the Homekey project in Pittsburgh.
        Contra Costa County saw the largest increase in homelessness in June 2023, in the cities of Richmond and Antioch, according to data released in Time Point Statistics 2023. The number of homeless people in Antioch will increase from 238 in 2020 to 334 in 2023.
